Today's Small Change: Move it outside.

Gear Up for the Great Outdoors

If the weather permits, exercising outside makes a whole lot of sense. First, it's free — no gym memberships or class fees to worry about. Second, it gives your skin an opportunity to produce vitamin D, the "sunshine vitamin," which is difficult to get enough of from diet alone. Third, it gives you a chance to enjoy your surroundings.

Here are a few tips that will help you make the most of your outdoor workout:

If you live in a hot climate or are exercising during a hot season:

  • Exercise during the coolest hours of the day (often early morning; midday is usually the worst).
  • Cover your head with a hat, and wear sunscreen and sunglasses to avoid sunburn.
  • Drink plenty of water before you start and after you finish. If you're going to work out for more than 30 minutes, carry a water bottle with you or stop for a drink during the workout.

If you're exercising in cooler weather:

  • Dress in layers, peeling them off as you warm up during your activity.
  • Choose underwear made from a fabric that draws sweat away from your skin (like polypropylene, Thinsulate, or silk). Wear an insulating second layer (or layers), such as fleece, pile, or down, and finish with a water-resistant jacket (and, if needed, pants) and waterproof shoes.
  • Wear a warm hat or ear band and gloves for maximum warmth.

Gear up:

  • Wear reflective gear if you exercise before the sun rises or after it sets.
  • Carry keys, water, and/or a music source in a fanny pack, but make sure it doesn't chafe your skin.
  • If you just want to carry keys, an old trick is to tie them to your shoelaces.
