7 Sleep-Stealing Foods to Stay Away From

If you find yourself tossing and turning at night, your dinner could be to blame. Our esteemed panel of nutritionists and dieticians list out seven foods that keep you up past your bedtime. For the ones that put you to sleep, click here.

Caffeine
You've known this guy for years. He's gotten you through countless all-nighters and pepped you up for that 8 a.m. Monday morning presentation. But did you know that caffeine isn't actually giving your body any energy? "Though caffeine does provide us with that feeling of alertness, it's just a stimulant," says Michelle Dudash, registered dietician, chef, and freelancer writer.

Aged Cheese

If a nap is in your future, steer clear of Parmesan, Romano, Asiago, and other hard cheeses (basically, all the yummy smelly ones!). The high levels of the amino acid tyramine are known to keep you up.

Spicy Foods
Hot tamale! Those hot wings may taste damn good during the football game, but they aren't going to feel so great come bedtime — especially if you're prone to heartburn, since lying down only amps up its side. Make sure you eat your favorite hot foods early enough in the day to prevent a sleepless night later.

Processed or Smoked Meats
Leave this one on the deli counter. Cynthia Pasquella, CCN, CHLC, CWC, says processed meats contain high levels of tyramine and makes the brain release a chemical that makes us feel alert. These meats also aren't the healthiest ones to munch on either, sleep patterns aside.

Alcohol
Even though it's a depressant, alcohol will, oddly enough, keep you up at night. "Many people use alcohol to help them relax, but it actually prevents your body from entering the deep stages of sleep," says Pasquella. Although you may fall asleep, you won't feel very well-rested in the morning.

Milk Chocolate

The average milk chocolate bar contains tyrosine, which is converted into dopamine — a stimulant, says Pasquella. This causes alertness and restlessness, which can keep you up at night.

Ginseng Tea
Herbal teas are great for sleeping, but steer clear of ginseng. It's been shown to act as a stimulant, and though some tea drinkers don't feel any effects from the tea, others experience insomnia and hypertension. If you might fall in this category, avoid drinking it several hours before bed, recommends Pasquella.

update on progress

May 20, 2010

I have been at a standstill for the last month or so. It has been very frustrating.

However, after a visit to the DR - I have high cholesterol - I did a re-evaluation of my diet and found out I was eating too much fats so I cut the fat down and have lost about 4 pounds this week.

I am eating nothing with a higher fat percent than 10%. It has made calorie counting pretty much un-necessary.

I am very relieved to be loosing again but a bit concerned about the fast rate it is going. If it conti...

Today's Small Change: Increase your flexibility.
Say "Om"
The word yoga means "to join," and it may seem as though everybody's doing it these days. But yoga is thousands of years old — it's an ancient Indian practice that enhances flexibility, builds strength, and tones the body while emphasizing mind–body unity.

Yoga instills a sense of calm and relaxation, but it boosts stamina as well. The focus on d...

Today's Small Change: Move it outside.

Gear Up for the Great Outdoors

If the weather permits, exercising outside makes a whole lot of sense. First, it's free — no gym memberships or class fees to worry about. Second, it gives your skin an opportunity to produce vitamin D, the "sunshine vitamin," which is difficult to get enough of from diet alone. Third, it gives you a chance to enjoy your surroundings. ...

Disappointed with progress for this week

March 10, 2010

Ok this is extremely frustrating. I seem to have hit a stopping point. I am not loosing right now.

I have to be comforted by the fact that I am drinking all my water, keeping my calories within the limit and getting my exercise in.

I just wish that my hard work was being reflected on my the scale and tape measure.

I know I have not done that badly. I have lost 37 pounds since I started and 13 pounds since the beginning of February. I know this is great but like everyone else I j...

Body's back on Track

March 6, 2010

Ok – it has been a week since I ate badly. I got my eating back on track by Tuesday. I have still felt a bit tired and constipated all week.

Today that seems to be going away. I have read that it is bad to take a lot of products to help with elimination so I have just keep drinking my water and eating health in the hopes that my body will get back on track.

It has taken a week but I am finally feeling my body get back to the way it should be.

At least I now know what will happen if I ...

Unhealth eatign over the weekend

March 3, 2010

I really blew the eating this weekend. I started eating poorly (with McD hashbrowns on Thursday and ending with Sundays dinner of french fries and a funnel cake). I know I did not gain any good points.

Worst than that I did not drink my water.

When I got up on Monday I was feeling really bad – bloated with a heavy stomach.

By the end of Tuesday – when I had got my eating back under control – I had lost 1 pound and was feeling much better.

Slow and steady

February 25, 2010

I know that the best, safest and longest lasting way to loos the fat is to do so slowly. I am averaging 2 pounds a week in fat loss.

It took 40 years to reach this weight and it will not be gone overnight but i really wish it would go away faster than it is. I know that I am eating right and exercising and the weight is going away at a safe and effective manner.

So despite my impatience I will continue on my journey knowing it will take time but the results I am getting now will be easier to...
